Government programmes on exemplar employers and launch of quality part-time work fund

The Minister for Women, Ruth Kelly, announced on 30 January 2007 progress on two programmes recommended by the Women and Work Commission to help reduce the gender pay gap and in particular stimulate cultural change among employers.

She announced that more than 100 companies and organisations have signed up to the Exemplar Employer initiative. The Government has worked with Opportunity Now to engage employers who have exemplar projects covering a wide range of issues, for example, working with schools to inform girls about careers in their sector, supporting mothers returning from work.

Minister for Women recently announced the successful projects awarded funding from the quality part time work fund aimed at improving the availability of quality part-time work opportunities.  The fund was lunched at an event with employers, CBI, and Opportunity Now in January.  Applications were invited from the voluntary sector, employers and specialists in flexible working.

Government Action plan: Implementing the Women and Work Commission recommendations

The Government announced its action plan to address the causes of pay gap highlighted in the Women and Work Commission Report Shaping a Fairer Future, which was presented to the Prime Minister by Baroness Prosser on 27 February 2006. This action plan set out how the Government is responding to the Women and Work Commission's recommendations. It described actions we can take to improve the prospects and career options of women in the labour market now, as well as those that will influence the choices of future generations of girls and achieve culture change in workplaces over a longer timeframe. .
