More women are needed in public life
As at 31 March 2007 women make up 34.4% of public appointments overall. Of the women who currently hold national public appointments,
5.7% of these are
from ethnic minority backgrounds and 4.9% are held by disabled
women.
This is despite the fact that women make up 51%
of the population. If public bodies are to reflect the society they
represent, then the number of women, particularly from minority
ethnic groups, must increase.
Together we can
Together We Can sets out the Government's plan to enable people to
engage with public bodies and influence the decisions that affect
their communities. To find out more, visit the site

Get a (Public) Life
During 2002, the Minister for Women led a national outreach
campaign to encourage more women into public life. The Women
and Equality Unit has put together a practical information guide,
Get a (Public) Life, on why action is necessary to increase the
number of women in public life.
