The Commonwealth
The EU/International Gender and Diversity Team works to
the UK’s gender-related activities and commitments within the
Commonwealth. The Commonwealth Secretariat is the main
intergovernmental agency of the Commonwealth, facilitating
consultation and co-operation among member governments and
countries. The Gender Section is responsible for developing and
implementing the Secretariat’s gender equality programme – with the
goal of strengthening the capacity of governments and civil society
to achieve women’s rights and gender equality in political, legal,
social and economic arenas.
The Commonwealth Plan of Action for Gender
Equality (2005–2015) provides the framework within which the
Commonwealth advances its commitment to gender equality and equity.
The Plan of Action focuses on four critical areas: Gender,
democracy, peace and conflict ; Gender, human rights and law;
Gender, poverty eradication and economic empowerment, and; Gender
and HIV/AIDS. The EU/International Team deals with specific actions
arising under the Commonwealth Action Plan, including
representation at the annual Commonwealth meeting.
