Key facts: Labour market

• 11% of women in the UK are in managerial positions, higher than any other EU country (Source: The Life of Women and Men in Europe 2002 — Eurostat).

 

• Women's employment rates in the UK are above the average of other EU countries across all working ages (Source: 2001 European Labour Force Survey). 

 

• Young women in the UK spend less time unemployed than other EU countries on average (Source: 2001 European Labour Force Survey).

 

Key facts: Education

• Women in the UK have the third highest level of completed education in the EU, falling just behind Sweden and Denmark (Source: 2001 European Labour Force Survey).

 

• Women in the UK are much more likely to be scientific researchers in higher education than most of their European counterparts (Source: The Life of Women and Men in Europe 2002 — Eurostat).

 

Key facts: Government

• In 2000, the UK had the fourth highest number of women in national government. 32% of UK women are in national and regional government, compared to the EU average of 23% (Source: European Database — Women in Decision Making).
