The Women and Equality Unit helps to co-ordinate,
negotiate and present UK positions on gender equality issues
within the European Union, United Nations, Commonwealth and Council
of Europe.

The UK actively participates in the inter-governmental mechanism for the advancement of women and gender equality, including the follow-up to the Beijing Platform for Action and Beijing+5
and Beijing+10, within the UN system. The Women and Equality Unit (WEU)
liaises across Government on international policy matters relating to gender equality.

The WEU represents the UK on the Council of Europe (Steering
Committee for equality
between women and men (CDEG)) in order
to co-ordinate, negotiate and present UK positions.
The WEU represents the UK within the Commonwealth
at the annual Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting. The Unit
liaises across government and co-ordinates, negotiates and presents
the UK positions on gender equality.
