Barbara Follett chaired the first meeting of a new Inter Ministerial Group
on Equalities on 15 January. The role of this group is to
consider and progress issues relating to equality and human rights
which cut across Departmental boundaries paving the way for
decisions at cabinet committee level where necessary.
2008 will be an exciting year for the equality agenda: the Government will
publish responses to the Equalities Review and the consultation on its
proposals for the equality legislation promised in the 2005 Manifesto;
the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) will begin its first
full year of work; and the new three year spending period begins in
April 2008, with equalities objectives featuring in many of the 30
Public Service Agreements. Local authorities across England will agree
new three year Local Area Agreements, which will include objectives
relevant to achieving success on equalities issues in their areas. The
Inter-Ministerial group touched on all of these issues at its first
meeting.
